WHO IS SALMA?
Hi, I’m Salma and I’m the owner of this shop. All the jewellery here is handmade by me using a pair of pliers and a whole lot of patience. I like to work primarily with anodised aluminium because it is non-allergenic, lighter than silver and will not tarnish. I also work with stainless steel, copper and occasionally sterling silver.
WHAT IS CHAINMAILLE?
Chainmaille jewellery is made using the same techniques traditionally used to make armour in days gone by. Unlike armour, jewellery does not have to withstand swords and arrows meaning that it can be made using lighter and prettier metals. Chainmaille is made by joining individual rings together in different patterns, commonly referred to as weaves, making it a time-consuming process that requires a lot of care and patience. It is also very rewarding to see a pile of rings transformed into a beautiful piece of jewellery.
There are hundreds of different weaves however each weave usually falls into one of four groups – European, Persian, Japanese and Mobius. Each group has it’s own distinctive style and appearance. European is simple and structured, Japanese uses small connecting rings whereas Persian tends to be more organic.
